Resolved Question: Can I use names of real places and people in fiction?

My novel takes place at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa (or I would like it to) The premise is based in reality. A potential murder that happened here. After that it is all fiction, building upon reality. I want to know can I write about Ames and ISU as my setting? Can I use the name of the person I think was murdered? I can change the names if I need to, but for my audience I would like it to be more personal.
